Police have revealed the final movements of a man hit and killed by a van in a late-night collision near Stansted Airport.

Emergency services descended on the B1383 Cambridge Road, in Ugley, shortly after 2.30am today (Monday, August 13).

Officers received reports that a Volkswagen Transporter van had struck a pedestrian.

Sadly, a 23-year-old man died at the scene of the incident.

Following a forensic examination of the road, which was closed between Pound Lane and The Chequers pub, Essex Police have confirmed the casualty had attended a function at a nearby country estate.

Police closed the road following the fatal crash

Inspector Rob Brettell, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our enquiries are still in their early stages but we have established that the pedestrian and a relative had left a function at Quendon Hall in Quendon and were walking along Cambridge Road.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and saw two men walking along that route.”

A 51-year-old man from the Saffron Walden area has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

Investigating officers are also appealing for witnesses who saw two men walking along the road shortly before crash to get in touch.

An Essex Police spokesman added: "Witnesses and anyone with CCTV or dash cam footage are asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01245 240590 or email collisionappeal@essex.pnn.police.uk."
