The village of Ugley in Essex, UK, has had that name for around a thousand years. It is pronounced "Oogley." That doesn't mean a thing when you're reading it in text. In the early part of the 20th century, Ugley had a branch of the nationwide club called the Women's Institute. Naturally, it became known as the Ugley Women's Institute, and newspapers had a field day. By the 1950s, something had to be done, and the club changed its name.
The name change never caught on, though, because it wasn't nearly as much fun as the Ugley Women's Institute. The press continued to make the joke up into the 1960s. Other villages in Britain have experienced the same problem. The village of Loose had their own branch of the Women's Institute, and eventually changed the name to Loose (West Kent) Women's Institute.
